Mastodon - 'Crack The Skye' (Warners / Relapse Records)

Fuck. Have you ever tried to review a fucking Mastodon record?! It’s not easy! Imagine trying to untangle your headphones with no thumbs. Mastodon’s sound has always been a multi-layered and almost impossible to simplify into a five hundred word review and their latest release ‘Crack The Skye’ is no different.

Mastodon have been around propping up mega line-ups at heavy metal festivals and gigs for years now. Playing second fiddle to unspeakable shit like Machine Head (Yeah I said it....and fuck Rob Flynn, too!) and generally getting buried by the flavor of the month “metal bands”.

Of course, Mastodon have headlined their own shows, have their own base of die-hard fans and have released some seriously heavyweight metal albums in the forms of ‘Remission’ and ‘Leviathan’ but it is with ‘Crack The Skye’ that Mastodon catch their fan base off guard with an album from way out of left field.

While this album shows that the band have grown and will continue to evolve, die-hards need not worry. The ever present dueling vocals and guitars that encapsulate Mastodon’s trademark sound are ever present on this album but it’s the individual vocal talents of Brent Hinds and Troy Sanders that shine through as both opt for a cleaner, less distorted sound as is evident in album opener ‘Oblivion’.

In a move away from the guitar driven metal records of the past, the band have experimented with various different instruments adding a ton of depth to the record. There is use of a vocoda on title track ‘Crack The Skye’ the continuous use of a keyboard throughout the record and even the addition of a sodding banjo as in an intro to ‘Divinations’. All of this is fused together by Brann Dailor’s drumming. His skill and technique are executed with such precision it’s not even funny. Sanders’ tech bass rounds off the rhythm section perfectly and it’s these two that really drive home the record in places where it could easily disappear up its own prog-metal arse. It’s the perfect accompaniment to Hinds’ and Bill Kelliher’s blistering axe-work.

The jewels in the crown are by far ‘The Czar’ and ‘The Last Baron’. Each an epic, ten min, opus to Rasputin and Czarist Russia. For those of you who did GCSE history, this should be a familiar subject. Both tracks are a weird mix of echoing mantras, melodic choruses and layered solos with added groove to boot. These tracks really show case what Mastodon are about. From the technical aspect of their sound to the epic riffs to the mythology behind the song writing. It all culminates in these two amazing pieces of music.
I don’t know if the term ‘prog out’ exists but that’s exactly what I was doing when I first heard these awesome tracks.

‘Crack The Skye’ seems much more calculated and focused in comparison to previous release ’Blood Mountain’ and I’m sure people will criticize how “polished” it sounds as well. I think that if you lose production values, the complex nature of Mastodon’s sound gets easily lost. Super producer Brendan O’Brian knows this and has worked with the band to produce one of their best albums to date.

Many believe that this is the album that is going to give Mastodon the final push to the “next level”. I’m not so sure. Mastodon have always been at that level for many years in my eyes and if you didn’t get them before, why the fuck would you get them now? Either way, there is no other band out there today doing something as original and something as technically impressive as these four men from Atlanta.

One Man's Shame

It was way back in 2003 when I first heard of William Elliot Whitmore.

I went to see a hardcore band called Converge with my mate Stu. I remember this gig really well because it was one of those shows that had such a weird line up. The headline act were supported by another hardcore band, the now defunct, Modern Life Is War along side an ambient sound-scrape-y, “I swear we’re not trying to be Mogwai”, band called Red Sparrows who are made up of members of Neurosis and Isis.

I remember being one of the few people in the audience that night chugging on the sweet , sweet amber nectar and being frowned at by all the Morris dancing, straight edge vegans* in attendance. I also remember the pit when Converge and Modern Life Is War playing being one of the most vicious I have seen / participated in.

Sandwiched in between all of the sweaty teens in skin tight jeans was one beer swilling man and his banjo. His name is William Elliot Whitmore. The man with a voice that sounds like he's been breast fed on Marlboro reds and a sound that that was so eerily cool, it took me completely off guard.

I came away from the gig completely blown away by WEW more so than any other band on the bill. I went out the next day and bought all of his records. If you can, pick up ‘Ashes To Dust’ or ‘Song Of The Blackbird’. They won’t let you down.

He is playing the Borderline Club in London on the 15th of April (ONE NIGHT BEFORE AC/DC!!!....I’ll save this for another post.) Make sure you catch this guy. It’s the right amount of alcohol-soaked-sorrow, dirty blues and broken heart country songs to not only allow you to enjoy yourself but if you bring your girl, you will definitely get laid. In the mean time, check out a live recording of 'One Man's Shame'.

Fuck, I love misery!

*There is nothing wrong with your life style but it does make you a pussy and you die earlier due to your horrible, horrible diet. You need iron, dick head!

Smoke - Grind - Sleep

Man, I fucking love Brutal Truth.

If you are a fan of the 'Grindcore' genre then this band is a must. I have been a fan of these guys for years. Many times myself and grind compadre, Dave, have got totally caned and listen to one BT record after another trying to wrap our minds around the disgustingly awesome riffage.

I think we both came to the conclusion that 'Extreme Conditions...' is their best work. Now I've said that I'm thinking 'Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom'.....

Anyways......

If you ever get the chance to see them live, do so. The first time I ever saw them live I remember having an awesome talk with very stoned Danny Lilker about how much I loved 'Game Over' and having a pint with a Guinness fuelled Kevin Sharpe. That night they destroyed the Underworld in Camden (full review on the Crossfire web site).

Safe to say that my inner, drug crazed, grind freak went ape shit when I got a text from French saying that he'd been working on a poster for a BT gig out in L.A. on behalf of Scion and VICE.

How fucking killer is this?!

You can see much more of French's work at http://www.tapedcopies.com/ and on his blog which you can find in my links.

Gentlemen.....TIME TO GRIND!

Pig Skins & Primadonas - Liverpool 4 - Real Madrid 0

Great news! Liverpool have finally pulled their fucking finger out!

When he's not beating up house and techno DJs in Southport bars (Goooooo on mah son!!) Stevie G is an amazing player and clearly the inspiration behind Liverpool's play last night.

Best thing about it all is that I made my girlfriend sit through the entire match. Yussss!

Hopefully we will be able to see the above image again when the competition is all said and done.

Many of you may be asking “Why are you putting this up on your blog Tom?! Are you mad?!”

The answer to that question is no. This is relevant to the main themes in my blog. I have it on good authority that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are massive Cannibal Corpse fans. So this bit of news falls under the ‘Metal – Miscellaneous’ category.

Speaking of Cannibal Corpse check out this their new video:

UUUUURGH!!

Ramblings of an idiot

Last year I spent a large portion of my time 'working' for a company that offered me zero in the way of job opportunities or mental stimulation. I was surrounded by people who were oppressive and self absorbed. Lunchtimes were spent in various bars in and around Soho suckling on the beer teet, up to my neck in the cocaine fuelled world of post production.

It was one of these boozy nights in Soho that my mate Kev put me in touch with a friend of his. That man went by the name of Zac Leeks who runs a website called Caught In The Crossfire.

‘Crossfire’ (as it’s known to its friends) is a website filled with people, much like myself, mouthing off on all things from books to film but it’s main selling point is continued documentation of the music and skate scenes. This was a web site that I had been aware of for quite some time and had been reading for a while now.

So, after having a phone shoved in my face by Kev, I had a brief phone conversation with Zac and soon after I started submitting my work.

Those hours at work went from being filled with hangovers, staring into space and contemplating masturbation in the office toilets to passing the time to me scribbling down my opinions on new music. Mainly metal. I think there may have been a Seasick Steve review in there somewhere as the token ‘look how diverse I am’ review. Piss poor attempt at being diverse, I know.

So rather than let this blog sit in cyber space and collect dust I thought it may be an idea to actually put something out there. So feel free to have a read of anything that takes your fancy. Just click the links below. You can also see what other people have wirtten on a wide variety of things at caughtinthecrossfire.com

Any of my future reviews or interviews will be posted both here and on the Crossfire web site.

Cheers

Tom
